 WING BUILDING CONTEST
Super Light Weight Composite Wing Contest
SAMPE 2006, May 2, Long Beach, California
The challenge is to build an ultra light composite wing with the highest load to failure at a maximum 2.0 inch deflection. The contest is open to both student teams and professional members of SAMPE.
- The wing will be straight with a constant cross section. The minimum length will be 24 inches and the maximum/minimum width will be 6.0 and 5.8 inches, respectively. The maximum wing weight will be 10 ounces. The lower wing surface, 6 x 24 inch except for the leading edge, must be planar (flat) within a total tolerance of 0.25 inch (one-quarter inch). This is not plus or minus but a total of 0.25 inch.
- Maximum wing cross sectional airfoil shape is shown in Figure 1. No structure will be allowed outside the maximum airfoil. A full size paper template of the maximum airfoil will be included with each kit. It is recommended that your wing be at least .050 inch undersize of the maximum airfoil so that it fits the load collar. Wings that are oversize will not fit the load collar and will be disqualified. Duct tape (1.0" wide) will be available on site for shimming load collar to achieve a tight fit of undersize wings. This shimming will count towards the wing weight.
- A 1.0 inch wide airfoil "load collar" must be able to slip freely over the entire wing. Some clearance is permitted, but a 0.25 inch diameter rod cannot fit between the load collar and the wing surface anywhere along the wingspan. Undersize wings will not be allowed to compete. .
- The wing surface must be robust. A 3 pound point load placed anywhere on the surface can not deflect the wing surface at that point more than 0.25 inch. This load will be applied using a 2.25 inch diameter ball.
- The wing will be supported on 23 inch centers (same fixture as bridge). Load will be gradually applied through a 1.0 inch wide load collar at the center of the wing, non-rotating, with vertical movement only (see Figure). Maximum load is defined as the highest load achieved within the allowed 2.0 inch crosshead deflection (same as tip deflection). No direct horizontal reaction force is allowed against the wing jig or load collar.
- Load testing will be conducted on the exhibition floor during the afternoon on Tuesday, May 2. The plan is to test the wings after bridge testing is complete. Each wing will be loaded only once. No retests are permitted. A team may submit only one wing for testing per entry fee. Multiple entries are permitted.
- Materials: Any fiber reinforced composite materials (fiberglass, aramid, carbon, boron fiber, etc. plus resin) can be used for the wing structural members. The airfoil surface must be only composites (i.e. fiberglass, aramid, carbon, boron fiber, etc. plus resin.) except for duct tape shimming mentioned previously. Also, adhesive, glue, foam, honeycomb, or balsa wood are the only non-composites that can be used. A composite kit of various materials will be supplied (similar to bridge kit). Any materials included in the kit that do not meet the rules cannot be used.
- All student wing entries must be accompanied by a poster to be judged at the show. General guidelines for poster presentations are available from the Business Office. Student entries without posters will not be eligible for prizes. The poster should highlight some material, process and/or design aspect of their wing. Wings without posters will be tested but will not be eligible for prizes. Each wing requires a poster. The posters must be submitted by 10 AM Tuesday at the "Bridge/Wing Prep" room near the conference registration area. The posters will be prominently displayed in the main registration area on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. A committee will judge the posters, based on technical merit. NOTE: Posters may not be removed until Thursday afternoon. If you want your poster returned but have left early, please provide an addressed envelope or shipping container to the staff.
- Multiple prizes will be awarded for the best wings. In addition, prizes for best posters will be given out. All prizes will be awarded at the Wednesday morning student awards breakfast. Door prizes will be awarded on Tuesday 5 PM on the balcony above the registration area. (Same as last year.)
- The entry form along with a $40 fee to defray contest costs must be received no later than March 10, 2006.
