Air Force MP3 Meeting: Nov. 9 at The Aerospace Corp.

Open only to U.S. citizens, the next Air Force Manufacturing Problem Prevention Program (MP3) meeting on November 9 will focus on composites bonding and joining, including advances in surface preparation, inspection and nondestructive testing. Of special interest are the Lessons Learned while fabricating large composite structures and their application to space systems.

There also will be selected tabletop displays of pertinent technologies, including sponsors Cytec Engineered Materials, Delsen Testing Laboratories. Janicki Industries, MISTRAS Group, Park Electrochemical Corp., TenCate Aerospace Composites, and Thermal Wave Imaging. Other sponsors are Airtech International, Argosy International, and Hitco Carbon Composites.

The MP3 meetings enable exchange of information between the Air Force and the contractor community on ways to prevent problems and minimize cost and schedule impacts on space programs.

The MP3 has saved the Air Force literally billions of dollars over the years. Updates and changes within the materials community that can improve space programs also are discussed.

Dr. Howard Katzman, Senior Scientist of The Aerospace Corporation, who leads the planning for the program, emphasized the importance of learning the lessons of the past as well as recent developments. He noted that, “in addition to presentations, the meeting will again feature tabletop displays. These displays will provide attendees with the opportunity to directly interact with relevant vendors.” He announced that the program will feature extended briefings by vice presidents of Space X and The Boeing Co., and Dr. Mark Shuart who led the large composites structures program for NASA. The meeting is being hosted by the Air Force Space and Missile Systems Center, The Aerospace Corporation, and the Los Angeles Chapter of SAMPE.

For more information, e-mail mp3@aero.org; or phone Dr. Howard Katzman at 310/336-5860.

There is no charge to attend, but advance registration is necessary; visit Website: www.aero.org/conferences/mp3.

You can send your upcoming Chapter Events to Janie Drake or Patricia Padelford.
